The Drone Journalism Lab’s first drone is a Parrot AR.Drone, a quadricopter controlled from a smart phone. We unboxed it on Dec. 23, and here’s video of our first flights indoors and outdoors. We learned a couple of lessons. The first: the iPad, outdoors on a sunny day, is useless as a controller. Second: The default settings are boring. But we must crawl before we walk. Soon we’ll add the GoPro HD camera to get better in-air footage, and we’ll remove default controls as we get more comfortable.
